Merry Christmas! What would the season be without some version of The Nutcracker?

Leave it to ABT to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. I swear to the above I’ve never witnessed an arts company so mismanaged since NYCO. Maybe the plan is to sink the ship because, wow, talk about disaster.
So after all the accolades for the soloists who saved ABT’s bacon last Spring with last minute, gorgeous debuts…what does ABT do to build upon this triumph?
I love Baroque dances. They hold the seed kernel of modern ballet but are much more. These dances are so lovely and showcase both male and female bodies to their absolute best.
A tribute to the Sun King:
A female dance:
When I saw the Mariinsky at BAM a few years back, I was very underwhelmed. The fabled company seemed to be in artistic quagmire and favoring overly tall, overly frail dancers with sad faces. It was as if the company found the human equivalents of Margaret Keane’s big eyed girls but less well fed and looking like Night of the Living Dead.
I spent my time admiring the supporting dancers and the Corps. There were some very worthy dancers that were being ignored. One of them was Anna Lavrinenko.
I kept her in mind and scoured the Russian ballet fan sites hoping she would get a break. But it never happened. I just couldn’t understand why a dancer so beautiful in face and form would be thrown away like yesterday’s newspapers.
This year Ms. Lavrinenko moved to Universal Ballet in Seoul, Korea. It looks like a good decision. I’ve seen in her Instagram that the company looks as if they are giving her opportunities in big roles. This clip shows her dancing the lead in Giselle. She looks fantastic. I wish I could see the whole performance.
So this happened last night! With a culmulative amount of 4 reharsals Sarah Lane (@sarahlaneps103) rose to the occasion and performed her ABT (@abtofficial) debut of the title role Odette/Odile on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera House (@metopera)! Kudos to our Rothbarts Grayson Davis (@graysongray86) and Alban Lendorf (@albanlendorf) for an exciting show as well!
I was looking through the Kremlin Ballet’s webpage to check on Joy Womack’s doings when I discovered Sarah Lane will be guest starring as Odette in their Swan Lake! Her Siegfried will be Royal Ballet’s Vadim Muntagirov. How I wish I could see it.
If you are in Moscow on September 29th, go see her and the Kremlin dancers.
There has been a lot of news the past few days regarding ABT roster changes. Congratulations for dancers Calvin Royal III, Christine Shevchenko, Sarah Lane and Devon Teuscher for their promotions. I’ve seen all of them dance this season and all of them truly deserved their new positions in the company. It will an exciting upcoming fall season and 2018 Spring season for these beautiful dancers.
Like many in ballet fandom I was dismayed and saddened by the unceremonious retirement of Veronika Part. I did sign the petition protesting her ouster from the company even though I didn’t think it would change the decision.
I count myself lucky as having the honor to watch Part dance Odette/Odile in Swan Lake, Myrthe in Giselle and in Monotones. I will miss her presence in the ranks.
Sarah Lane had a great debut on such short notice schedule change. Swan Lake is the hardest ballet for a female dancer testing both her strength and acting abilities.
This Afternoon’s performance of ABT’s Swan Lake contained an exciting debut by Devon Teuscher as Odette. There was plenty of good notice from her debut a few months ago in DC.
It's with great honor to announce that I will be competing in the 13th international ballet competition starting tomorrow in Bolshoi Theatre. I would be so grateful for your prayers and thoughts tomorrow as I will draw my number. I am so grateful for my coach, partner, my team and for all of you who are rooting for me. Wishing all the contestants health, good luck, and tons of confidence! #moscowballetcompetition2017 #moscow #gaynorminden #gaynorgirlpro #bolshoiballetacademy #kremlinballet Philippians 4:13 photo by @natalia_inkina light by @askabanov
Congratulations to Joy Womack who will be in the Moscow Ballet Competition second round. She is the only dancer from the USA competing at Senior level.
