When I saw the Mariinsky at BAM a few years back, I was very underwhelmed. The fabled company seemed to be in artistic quagmire and favoring overly tall, overly frail dancers with sad faces. It was as if the company found the human equivalents of Margaret Keane’s big eyed girls but less well fed and looking like Night of the Living Dead.
I spent my time admiring the supporting dancers and the Corps. There were some very worthy dancers that were being ignored. One of them was Anna Lavrinenko.
I kept her in mind and scoured the Russian ballet fan sites hoping she would get a break. But it never happened. I just couldn’t understand why a dancer so beautiful in face and form would be thrown away like yesterday’s newspapers.
This year Ms. Lavrinenko moved to Universal Ballet in Seoul, Korea. It looks like a good decision. I’ve seen in her Instagram that the company looks as if they are giving her opportunities in big roles. This clip shows her dancing the lead in Giselle. She looks fantastic. I wish I could see the whole performance.
